Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa who has been undergoing treatment since September 22 at the Apollo hospital suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday evening. Later she was put on an Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation. (ECMO).
The ECMO which also known as the Extra Corporeal Life support (ECLS) is a heart assist device which aids the cardiac and respiratory support for those who are unable provide the sufficient amount of gas exchange to sustain life.
Thus specifically, the ECMO is resorted in situations where the attending medical personal believes that the suspected case of cardiac arrest is potentially reversible. The survival rates after being put on EMCO might varies, but some reports said that the chances of survival do improve.
